Amara Frenchies Resource Library

Health & Wellness

Your Frenchie's long-term health starts with the choices you make from day one. This section covers the three pillars of Frenchie health: what they eat, conditions to be aware of, and how to financially prepare for their care.

Diet
(Your first line of defense)

Living beings thrive on a balanced diet of fresh, whole foods. This includes your dog!

Feeding Philosophy

  • Whole foods as much as possible: fresh fruits, vegetables, and meats (Cooked protein digests easier and carries less bacterial risk than raw.)

  • Protein should make up roughly 50% of the diet. Rotate protein sources like beef, chicken, turkey, venison, lamb, bison, duck, quail, rabbit, salmon, and whitefish. (I avoid pork due to toxicity.)

  • Low sugar, low carb — yeast thrives on both, and Frenchies are especially prone.

  • Rice and quinoa are tolerated well (avoid oats)

  • Portions: 1.5 to 2 cups per day.

  • Schedule: 3 meals if long gaps bother them; 2 otherwise.

  • Kibble recommendation: NutraSource — grain-free, low-carb, available in multiple proteins.

Safe Fruits & Vegetables

  • Wild blueberries, pumpkin, zucchini, asparagus (snap off woody ends), broccoli (steamed), Spinach, parsley, avocado flesh (no pit or skin), green beans, peas, carrots, sweet potato (in moderation).

Healthy Treats

  • Apples, cultivated blueberries, raspberries and blackberries (small amounts).

  • Beef marrow bones - in the frozen section (fillable and reusable)

  • Freeze dried liver or lung

  • Peanut butter (without xylitol/birch sugar)

Supplements & Toppers

  • Custom Amara Frenchies breakfast topper

  • Coconut cream (in moderation)

  • NuVet Plus — Immune system builder

  • Pet Honesty Multivitamin 10 in 1 (puppy & adult formula)

Never Feed These

  • Grapes or raisins, garlic or onions, nutmeg, chocolate.

  • Walnuts, macadamia nuts, xylitol (always check peanut butter labels), alcohol, caffeine.

Common Frenchie Health Conditions

Being informed helps you plan ahead, catch things early and advocate effectively for your dog.

  • IVDD / IVDH: Frenchies have a genetic predisposition to spinal disc issues. Moderate, consistent exercise has been shown to be protective.

  • Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS): Their short snouts can cause breathing difficulty. Watch for excessive snoring, labored breathing, or overheating.

  • Yeast infections: Especially in skin folds, ears, and paws. A low-carb, low-sugar diet is your best prevention.

  • Skin allergies: Common in the breed. Diet, environment, and cleaning products can all be triggers.

  • Eye conditions: Frenchies have prominent eyes prone to irritation and injury. Keep folds clean and dry.

We breed for strong breathing and athletic form and are running a pilot study on vaginal seeding for skin & immune health. Ask us about our health testing and breeding standards.

Financial Planning for Vet Care

Being financially prepared means you never have to make a hard choice in an emergency.

  • CareCredit: A healthcare credit line accepted at most veterinary practices. Keep one on reserve specifically for emergencies.

  • Pet health insurance: Worth exploring, especially for puppies. Compare plans based on breed-specific coverage.

  • Health savings account: Some owners set aside a dedicated monthly amount for pet health expenses.

  • Whatever your approach, have a plan before you need it.
